This is my replica of the agate window Catherine and the Moiety use to power Gehn's "dead" Linking Books in the CyanWorlds game Riven.

It is made with MDF board as a base cut to shape with a jigsaw. The outside "rock" edge is air drying clay (which needed to be glued on) which was then painted to look like rock. The main image is a print out which was then glued to the board and sealed with mod podge. A gloss spray was then added to make it shiny. The design around the centre was created with a metallic 3D paint to create a soldered metal look then given a light wash with brown acrylic paint to give it a slight rusty aged look.

Now all I need is a Linking Book to use it on ;)

This looks stellar! Really nice work.
I think in the game there was supposed to be a "focusing" crystal window that would correct a bad image/connection in an unstable book. At least that's the impression I got. Not that you have to add one, it's awesome as-is.

Hey thanks I'm glad you like it :-)

Re: the crystal window, this is it! Gehn refers to it as a crystal in his boiler island journal. Perhaps you mean something like a clear "crystal" across the opening? I considered doing this but opted not to in the end. Finding materials was the main reason I chose not to but I wasn't even sure if it was meant to have that anyway :-\

Yes, I was specifically referring to the window portion of it. It's been a while since I looked carefully at those segments of the game, but I had the notion that there was a translucent mineral over the linking pane, doing the focusing. Yours doesn't suffer for the lack of one, though. I really like it.

I think you are correct about the translucent mineral thing, believe me I've stared at both the in game images and photos of the prop at Cyan enough, lol. I'm kind of a perfectionist so I may try and add one if I find materials for it ;-)

Haha, I know exactly what you mean. I'm probably about as familiar with Catherine's costume as one can get without taking the original out of its display case. :P
Kudos to you for taking so much care with it!

Looks great! Does it have a plastic backing over the window too? :D

Thanks. I did consider doing something like that but no I decided not to put any plastic screen or anything inside the actual hole section. Wasn't sure whether I was "supposed" to or not - lol. I made this by laminating some MDF boards so I could have put some in on one the layers. How did they do it on the original prop?

No words. No words.

PS: You beat me to this project!! I'm still in "research mode" on it. LOL

"No words" says it all :D Thanks.

You probably have your own process in mind for creating your replica but if you want anymore details on how I made mine feel free to ask. The hardest part was finding a decent image of the window to use as a base. I looked everywhere. Found some Mysterium photos online, RIUM+ sent me a few he'd taken at Mysterium, and RAWA was even kind enough to take a photo himself and send it to me. Still, after all that, no single picture was "perfect" so I had to make a composite image in photoshop using the in game shots and bits and pieces of the photos I had. I can send you a copy of it if you'd like.

Spectacular job.

I agree that reference images have been a pain to find. Any that you can scan and send to my e-mail would be awesomely appreciated!
